Washington: Domestic violence rate

The domestic violence rate is calculated by dividing the number of reported incidences of domestic violence by total population.  We multiply the result by 10,000.  Domestic violence includes various types of crime such as murder, robbery, rape, and assault.  To view a complete list, visit the Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs website.

In Washington...

  • the number of domestic violence incidences was 37,340 in 2013 compared to NA in the U.S.;
  • domestic violence incidences decreased by 24.2 percent between 2010 and 2013, compared to an increase of NA percent in the U.S. as a whole;
  • the rate of domestic violence incidences was 53.6 per 10,000 population in 2013 compared to NA in the U.S..

NOTE: Domestic violence is defined by relationship of victim to offender or by shared living space. These numbers are derived from monthly domestic violence forms or National Incident-Based Reporting System submissions by Washington State law enforcement agencies. Some agencies do not report each year causing some gaps in the data.
